How A Gift Inspired Design History

Did you know that the Bulova Accutron wristwatch sparked a creative movement that has spread across the fashion world?  Accutron watches featured unique designs that sparked interest from a wide pool of customers, some famous wearers including Joe DiMAgio and Elvis! A notable characteristic of these watches was that the mechanisms of the watch could be seen from the outside. This unique and attractive design inspired many other designers, including Tinker Hatfield who went on to create the Nike Air Max 1

Hatfield was an architect who designed buildings for the company, but switched to designing shoes for Nike in the 1980s. After being influenced by the strong designs of the Accutron Spaceview, Hatfield was inspired to design shoes that were similar in their style. From this idea came the Nike Air Max 1, a sneaker that showed their inner workings through a transparent window in their sole. This was the first sneaker to feature this design, and the Nike Air Max became a popular shoe throughout the decades.

The influence of Accutron watches led to the creation of one of the most iconic sneakers of our time, with millions being sold. To learn more about how Accutron Spaceview influenced the creative movement, take a look at the infographic below:
